SCHOOL DESCRIPTION

Waerenga School is a small, rural school in the North Waikato catering for Year 0 – 6 students. It is a decile 8 school with a roll fluctuating between 80 and 95 students in any given year. Children are from a predominately farming background, with other families employed in a variety of occupations.

ERO REPORT.

The school’s recent Education Review Office (ERO) Report confirmed that the school’s students are provided with a quality education in a safe and secure environment, and that the Board of Trustees governs the school in the best interests of its students and staff. It recognised that the school’s goal of achieving a high standard of literacy and numeracy is being realised. It also remarked on the significant percentage of high achieving students within the school.

CULTURAL DIMENSION

Waerenga School’s curriculum will continue to recognise the unique position of Maori within New Zealand society. It will provide students with experiences and understandings in cultural traditions,language and local and national histories. Waerenga School will take all reasonable steps to provide learning opportunities in tirkanga Maori and te reo Maori for students whose parent requests it. The programmes will reflect the financial, human and physical resources available to the school. Existing parents of Maori children attending Waerenga School have the opportunity to discuss any issues, concerns or matters of interest on achievement twice a year (March and September). Waerenga School also recognises the values the uniqueness of other cultures represented at this school.
